Me and Him
Me and Him
Saturday 17th January 2015
The Brolly Parade took place indoors due to the dismal wet weather. In all there were twenty brollies, led by Grand Marshall Val Chambers. The ladies and gentlemen of the Parade must be congratulated on their inventiveness in Brolly Design and Decoration. They made several circuits of the ballroom to the music of the Sensation Brass Band: line-up – Steve Graham, Mike Scroxton, John Lawrence (tpts), Pete Middleton, Roy Stokes (tbns), Alan Cresswell, Mike Betts, Mike Gooding (reeds), Pete Lay (bs drm), Pete Jackman (sn drm). This is a spectacle not to be missed for its colour and fun.
Gambit Jazzmen: line-up – John Shillito (tpt), Barry Weston (tmb), John Maddocks (clt), Chris Marney (bjo), Roger Link (bs), Pete Lay (dms/leader). What a line-up. One could feel the excitement of anticipation of what was to come. Here they play "Tin Roof Blues".
A hot, swinging jazz ensemble with some magnificent solos. Three more sets to come – can we stand the pace – you bet.
New Orleans Heat: line-up – John Scantlebury (clt/alto/vcl), Richard Church (tpt), Dave Vickers (tmb), Alan Birkenhead (bjo), Barry Grummett (pno/leader), Harry Slater (bs), Colin Bushell (dms). The band is sounding very well with the changed line-up and have a good repartee going. The choice of what to share with you has been difficult, as both the ensemble and solos were very good; but Me and Him were particularly taken with John’s throaty saxophone rendition of “They Call it Stormy Monday”.
