Me and Him
Me and Him
Friday 16th January 2015 – Monday 19th January 2015
Really looking forward to this Festival, but not the journey, which was predictably horrible! Since our previous visit last January some changes have been made to the holiday camp. Still full board, but self-service, which works very well and the half-price evening bar still exists. Good news for all pianists, a new piano and a decent adjustable piano stool!!!
Bands playing this weekend are: Sunset Café Stompers, Golden Eagle Jazz band, New Orleans Heat, Gambit Jazzmen, Dennis Armstrong’s Bristol Blue Five plus Two, Savannah Jazz Band and The Rich Bennett Band.
Sunset Café Stompers: line-up – Pete Middleton (tmb), Steve Graham (tpt), Mike Betts (clt/tnr), Mike Denham (pno), Eddie Edwards (bjo), John Coad (dms). Known for their wide repertoire, they eased us into the weekend with some cool jazz playing their first set of four. After dinner they upped the tempo with good dance music and some really hot traditional New Orleans jazz. Each announcement by Mike Denham was sprinkled with interesting anecdotes and information. Listen to them play “When my Dreamboat comes Home”. They were joined by guest vocalist Hamish Maxwell, what a powerhouse voice.
Golden Eagle Jazz Band: line-up – Mike Scroxton (tpt), Roy Stokes (tmb), Alan Cresswell (clt), Kevin Scott (bjo/leader), Mike Broad (bs), Pete Jackman (dms). There is very good camaraderie in this band which is enjoyed by everyone. They were certainly on form this weekend with all of the three sets that they played. Here the play “Royal Telephone”. Well appreciated by listeners and dancers alike.
